Using Zoom: Attending a Course Basics

You can use the controls at the bottom of the Zoom window or your phone screen.

Mute and unmute your audio and start and stop your video by using the buttons at the bottom of your home screen.

You can raise your hand in class by clicking on participants, and then on “Raise Hand.”

You can raise your hand by clicking on "more" and then "raise hand."

To access the chat for the class, click on the chat button at the bottom of the screen. You will then see all chats to you and to everyone. You may chat privately by clicking on a participant’s name in the drop-down box.

You can send messages to the class, to your professor, or individuals by clicking on "More" and then "Chat."

You can change your name as it appears to your Professor and others by clicking on the box with your video screen, and clicking on the three dots

After clicking on the three dots, select “Rename.”

You can opt to view everyone, using the Gallery View. Or you can view mainly your Professor or current speaker using “Speaker View.” You can toggle between options in the upper right hand corner of the video screen.

Speaker view:

In Gallery View, the person currently speaking has their box highlighted in green.

In speaker view, you see mainly the person currently speaking. Others appear in thumbnails across the top of your screen.

To change the meeting settings on your phone, click “More” and then “Meeting Settings.”

You can opt to:

  • Make the meeting controls at the bottom of the screen always appear
  • Use the “touch up my appearance feature”
  • View or not view non-video participants
